Origins Of Halloween
The origin of Halloween can be traced to the Celtic festival of Samhain. This is a pagan religious holiday that marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celtics believed this was when spirits usually crossed over into the physical world. As a result, they lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off roaming spirits. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day to honor saints and martyrs. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve and later transformed into Halloween. The idea behind this Christian observance was to replace the pagan elements of this festival with a holy celebration. However, Halloween traditions have remained to this day.
Carving Jack-lanterns
This tradition began based on the legend about a man named Stingy Jack. He trapped the devil and let him go only on the condition that Jack would never go to hell. Unfortunately, after his death, heaven didn’t want him either, so Jack was forced to roam the earth for eternity. The locals in Ireland started carving scary faces on turnips and placing them on their windows to scare Jack and other evil spirits away. Eventually, people started using pumpkins instead.
Trick or Treating
There needs to be more debate about the origin of this tradition. Some believe that during Samhain, Celtic people would leave food out to appease the spirits roaming at night. Over time, people began to dress as these evil spirits in exchange for similar food and drink offerings. On the other hand, some believe the tradition can be traced to the U.S. and Canadian Christian custom of belsnickling. This tradition involved groups of custom people going from house to house to perform small tricks in exchange for food, candy, and drink.
Wearing Scary Costumes
Due to their belief that spirits roamed the Earth during Samhain, the Celts wore scary costumes as disguises to confuse the spirits and protect themselves.
Black and Orange
This also originated from the Celtic festival of Samhain. To them, black represented the “death” of summer, while the orange symbolized the autumn harvest season.
